Bretts Wharf to Remain Open and Remain Right Where it is
28/11/2011
The ever-exuberant Alastair McLeod is literally jumping for joy with the news that the iconic Bretts Wharf Restaurant and River Room was now NOT closing, as had been previously thought. “I can't tell you how happy I am personally, and I know I speak for all the staff here, when I say we are absolutely delighted that Brisbane City Council has deferred its plans for Kingsford Smith Drive and guaranteed Bretts can operate until January 2015.
Brisbane City Council has confirmed Bretts Wharf is now set to stay open until January 2015, and hopefully beyond. “When it was confirmed late last year that the Council had resumed the business we were devastated” said Alastair “The owners of the business actively searched for a comparable site, but to no avail, which actually has now turned out to be a good thing, as we can stay here at this magnificent location”.
The historic site is unique in Brisbane, it boasts stunning river views and includes a contemporary restaurant, a separate function room and lawns ideal for wedding ceremonies or garden parties and a large kitchen, which is also used for preparation of the many glamorous events Bretts Wharf caters off-site.
Bretts Wharf has a renewed energy and vitality to source and create dishes using the very best local Queensland produce but cooking it more simply and at a price point that will be irresistible. “The produce will always be the star!” said Alastair.
This same philosophy will flow through to the on-site functions room, while the off-site catering division will maintain its reputation for serving restaurant quality food regardless of the location.
“While thrilled, the news is tinged with some sadness, as we were forced to cancel all our functions booked for next year and we all feel simply gutted that we had to cancel people’s weddings for what is now, apparently, no reason” said Alastair. “As you can appreciate we’re going to be VERY busy building our function and wedding business back up for the years ahead”.
Alastair also reported that when the news came that they could remain at their existing location, they were deep into the organization of a farewell party “We were planning a huge night on the eve of Australia Day with live music and headline acts” he said “We love a party here, so we’ve decided to go ahead and make it a ‘we’re staying open’ party and doubling up as a fundraiser for YoungCare – stay tuned for more information!”.
