Tropical Medicine Comes To Brisbane

09/10/2012

Brisbane is the home of tropical medicine research in Australia and Lord Mayor Graham Quirk welcomed the news the city would host the International Conference for Tropical Medicine and Malaria 2016.

The International Conference for Tropical Medicine and Malaria 2016 will be held at the Brisbane Convention & Exhibition Centre in 2016 and is set to attract 2000 delegates and is estimated to inject more than $5 million into the economy.

Cr Quirk congratulated all involved in securing the conference, including Brisbane Marketing’s Convention Bureau, the Brisbane Convention & Exhibition Centre, Events Queensland and University of Queensland/Queensland Institute of Medical Research Associate Professor Malcolm Jones the Australian Congress Committee co-chair

“This conference win for Brisbane reflects the city’s rich history, innovation and hard work in the tropical medicine arena,” Cr Quirk said.

“As Brisbane is home to tropical medicine research in the country it is only fitting Australia’s new world city should host this major international industry conference.”

Home to the Queensland Institute of Medical Research, Australia’s premier research organisation in tropical medicine, Brisbane was also the base of Dr Joseph Bancroft the father of tropical medicine in Australia and his family who continued his important work in this area.

The main building of the Queensland Institute of Medical Research (QIMR) is now named the Bancroft Centre, in honour of the legacy of the Bancrofts.

“The Queensland Institute of Medical Research is the largest medical research institute in the Southern Hemisphere and a centre of excellence, this is just one of Brisbane’s amazing credentials in the tropical medicine arena,” Cr Quirk said.

“Brisbane has maintained its major focus in tropical medicine with many ground-breaking research successes past and present.

“In fact the QIMR, along with the University of Queensland are conducting major research into malaria.

“We already know Brisbane is a leading destination for high profile business events and this announcement only strengthens that reputation both nationally and internationally.”
