The world's largest solar powered Christmas tree is set to delight the Brisbane crowds when it is officially lit by the Lord Mayor in Brisbane’s King George Square this festive season.
A recent refurbishment of Brisbane City Council’s Christmas Tree has decked it out with new foliage, decorations and a sophisticated solar powered lighting system featuring 16,000 bulbs.
Lord Mayor Campbell Newman said he was delighted the new-look tree would be more environmentally sustainable and return to its much-loved location in King George Square.
“The reopened square can again proudly display our city’s Christmas tree,” Cr Newman said.
“The wide, open spaces of the Square are perfectly suited to showcasing the refurbished tree which features 250 red opaque baubles, a multicoloured twinkling light system and a giant star made up of solar panels for the tree’s top.
“I am inviting Brisbane residents and visitors to join me for the lighting of the new-look tree to kick off the festive season on Friday 27 November from 6:30pm.
Entertainment for the event will include performances by celebrated Brisbane singer, Katie Noonan, theatre legend, Bille Brown, Christmas Elves from Flipside Circus and, of course the biggest star of all, Santa.
Finalists from the Christmas Star competition will also perform along with a massed choir made up of local singing ensembles.
The new-look tree will remain in King George Square until Saturday 26 December before it is removed to make way for New Year's Eve celebrations.
