Mark your diaries and look out for your new look online invitation for the first Member Networking Function of the new financial year, to be held at Old Government House and catered by Merlo Kitchen Event Catering, on Tuesday 4 August.
The recently restored Old Government House, constructed between 1860 and 1862, was the first public building completed for the new Colony of Queensland. The House was designed by architect Charles Tiffin, and built by Joshua Jeays from locally sourced materials.
Substantially modified over the years, the House has been the home of eleven Governors, the University of Queensland and the National Trust of Queensland.
The restoration of the House was achieved through a partnership of QUT, the Queensland Government and the National Trust of Queensland. QUT assumed responsibility for the House in 2002, and the restoration project has been a major initiative of Queensland’s 150th anniversary celebrations.
The restored Old Government House incorporates a range of important public spaces as well as a virtual museum reflecting life in early colonial Queensland.
A special feature of the House will be a permanently dedicated gallery exhibiting the works of the renowned Australian and Queensland artist, William Robinson. The renovation also includes a Tea Room at the rear of the House, and a number of other function rooms which are commercially available for meetings or major events.
Merlo Kitchen Event Catering is available onsite for function catering, and is responsible for the Tea Room in the house – serving lamingtons made from the original recipe, created in the house during Lord Lamington’s term as Governor of Queensland, 1896 – 1901.
