Who's who in the tourism industry

Tourism is promoted at different levels by national, state, regional and local tourism organisations. Below is an outline of the various organisations involved with the Queensland and Greater Brisbane region tourism industry.

Tourism Australia is a statutory authority of the Australian Government which promotes Australia as a tourism destination internationally and domestically and delivers research and forecasts for the sector. Tourism Australia reports to the Cabinet Minister with responsibility for tourism.

Tourism Queensland is the State Government agency responsible for guiding tourism development and marketing. Its key role extends to destination management, industry and market development, international and domestic marketing and tourism policy. Through this role Tourism Queensland works in conjunction with the Department of Employment, Economic Development and Innovation to deliver the Queensland Government’s tourism program.

Regional tourism organisations, such as Brisbane Marketing, play a key role in coordinating the tourism and destination marketing efforts of industry, local government and the community.

Local tourism organisations and local governments are responsible for promoting their local area and driving or participating in local tourism development initiatives.

There are a number of organisations involved in the planning, development and coordination of tourism in Queensland, each with complementary roles and responsibilities.

The Queensland Tourism Industry Council (QTIC) is the State peak body for tourism and is a not-for-profit membership organisation representing members’ interests – both large and small. QTIC provides a broad range of membership services and maintains strong industry representation in all relevant forums.

The Department of Employment, Economic Development and Innovation (DEEDI) works to sustain employment growth through the key economic drivers of mining and energy, primary industries and fisheries, tourism, employment and regional development and trade.

The Queensland Information Centres Association is the key industry body for Visitor and Tourist Information Centres in Queensland.

The Australian Tourism Export Council (ATEC) is the peak industry body representing Australia’s tourism sector. Their mission is to build better business relationships for members and to represent the inbound tourism industry before government and business leaders.

The Tourism and Transport Forum (TTF) is the peak industry group for the Australian tourism, transport, aviation and investment sectors. A national, member-funded Chief Executive Officer forum, TTF advocates the public policy interests of the 200 most prestigious corporations and institutions in these sectors.

Backpacking Queensland is the peak backpacking and independent travel industry body for the state. It was formed to enhance the commercial viability of its members through the provision of marketing support and representation to all levels of government.

Brisbane Airport Corporation (BAC) runs Brisbane Airport, the sole passenger airport serving Brisbane and the third busiest in Australia. BAC is part of a holding company group corporate structure, the ultimate shareholders of which are major Australian and international organisations (including Amsterdam Airport Schiphol) and significant institutional investors.
